The Enhancing Humanities Research in Africa (EHURA) programme, an initiative of the African Humanities Association (AHA) supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, invites applications for the 2025/2026 Mentorship Programme.

The Mentorship Programme is designed to support and advance female academics in the humanities and related social sciences by providing structured and context-sensitive mentoring. It responds to the persistent gendered barriers faced by women in academia and forms a core pillar of EHURA’s commitment to strengthening research capacity, publication output, and academic leadership among African women scholars.

Programme Objectives

The EHURA Mentorship Programme seeks to:

  1. Support female academics to strengthen their research profiles, publication trajectories, and leadership confidence within their institutions.
  2. Offer targeted guidance on academic publishing and career development.
  3. Promote regional, cross-disciplinary exchange and peer-to-peer learning.

Eligibility

Applications are invited exclusively from female candidates who meet the following criteria:

  1. Early- and mid-career faculty (within approximately 8 years of PhD award) in the humanities and related social sciences;
  2. Academics based at African universities who demonstrate strong potential for research leadership and scholarly growth; and
  3. Candidates with a clear commitment to advancing knowledge production in Africa, fostering mentoring cultures, and demonstrating leadership potential.

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit the following in a single PDF file:

  1. Cover letter (maximum 300 words) outlining motivation for applying and expected benefits from the mentorship.
  2. Updated Curriculum Vitae (CV) indicating academic position, research areas, and publications.
  3. Brief statement of research interests or ongoing project (maximum 1,000 words).
  4. Letter of institutional endorsement, confirming support for participation in the mentorship programme.

  • Application Deadline: February 19, 2026
  • Notification of Results: February 27, 2026
  • Programme Date: 30 June – 1 July 20, 2026
