THE HOST

The African Humanities Association (AHA) is a fully-fledged organisation committed to promoting research and publications in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts in Africa. It was established with the adoption of its constitution in Abuja in February 2020. Growing out of the African Humanities Program (AHP), our aim is to stimulate curiosities through a process of sustained mentoring towards the creation of spaces for awkward, uncomfortable and critical issues to be raised and questions to be asked – the creative essence of our disciplines.

With the depth of a humanities and social science approach and not the quick fix of technicist or formulaic solutions, the AHA takes the context of social problems in Africa very seriously. We see ourselves as part of a wide-ranging discussion on the ethical implications of various options to deal with our challenges. We are also confronted with many difficulties in the university sector itself, not least the struggle to establish a culture of research and publishing in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts

THE CONFERENCE

The neglect of the Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts and their marginalisation are global phenomena, but it seems as if some African governments and universities are particularly strident in their denigration of these disciplines. The damage has been deep and widespread resulting in a generalised impoverishment of infrastructure and human resources. Our approach in the AHA is not to wallow in futile complaint about the ongoing conditions. Instead, we intend using our agency to revitalise our scholarship by encouraging cooperation and collaboration across disciplines and countries.

The conference brings together a wide range of scholars, performers, practitioners, authors, artists and activists to debate the critical intersections between knowledge and society, between research and the multifarious crises across the continent. It is about engaging scholarship, sustained by the creative possibilities of a dialogue between those at and outside universities in building intellectual communities. The conference encourages a detailed interrogation of our condition, offering platforms for deciphering the social, political, economic, linguistic, cultural and artistic challenges facing the continent with a sensitivity to the connections between the imaginative ingenuities of our humanities scholarship and the creative agency in the multifarious struggles of people in Africa to improve their conditions of life.

The conference is divided into three broad bands of scholarship, each with its own convenor and organising sub-committee, viz. (i) Humanities, Grace Musila (Wits University), (ii) Social Sciences, Jimi Adesina (UNISA) and (iii) the Arts, Amanda Tumusiime (Makerere).

The conference will be in-person at UCT as well as virtual.

L'HÔTE

L’African Humanities Association (AHA) est une organisation à part entière qui s'engage à promouvoir la recherche et les publications en sciences humaines, sciences sociales et en arts en Afrique. Elle a été créée avec l'adoption de sa constitution à Abuja en février 2020. Issu du African Humanities Programme (AHP), notre objectif est de stimuler les curiosités à travers un processus de mentorat soutenu vers la création d'espaces pour que les problèmes gênants, inconfortables et critiques soient soulevés et que les questions soient posées - l'essence créative de nos disciplines.

L'AHA prend très au sérieux le contexte des problèmes sociaux en Afrique, adoptant une approche approfondie des sciences humaines et sociales et non la solution rapide des technicistes ou des formules. Nous nous considérons comme faisant partie d'un large débat sur les implications éthiques des diverses options pour faire face à nos défis. Nous sommes également confrontés à de nombreuses difficultés dans le secteur universitaire lui-même, notamment la lutte pour établir une culture de la recherche et de la publication dans les Sciences Humaines, les Sciences Sociales et les Arts.

LA CONFÉRENCE

La négligence des sciences humaines, des sciences sociales et des arts et leur marginalisation sont des phénomènes mondiaux, mais il semble que quelques gouvernements et universités africains soient particulièrement stridents dans leur dénigrement de ces disciplines.

Les dommages ont été profonds et étendus, entraînant un appauvrissement généralisé des infrastructures et des ressources humaines. Notre approche au sein de l'AHA ne consiste pas à nous plaindre de manière futile des conditions actuelles. Au lieu de cela, nous comptons se servir de notre pouvoir et de nos ressources pour revitaliser notre savoir dans ces domaines d’études en encourageant la coopération et la collaboration entre les disciplines et entre les pays.

La conférence réunit un large éventail d'universitaires, d'artistes, de praticiens, d'auteurs, d'artistes et d'activistes pour débattre des intersections critiques entre le savoir et la société, entre la recherche et les multiples crises qui secouent le continent. Il s'agit d'une recherche engagée, soutenue par les possibilités créatives d'un dialogue entre ceux qui travaillent dans les universités et ceux qui n'y travaillent pas, afin de construire des communautés intellectuelles. La conférence encourage une interrogation détaillée de notre condition, en offrant des plates-formes pour déchiffrer les défis sociaux, politiques, économiques, linguistiques, culturels et artistiques auxquels le continent est confronté, avec une sensibilité aux liens entre les ingéniosités imaginatives de notre recherche en sciences humaines et le pouvoir créatif qui se manifeste dans les luttes multiples des personnes en Afrique pour améliorer leurs conditions de vie.

La conférence est divisée en trois grands groupes d'études, chacun ayant son propre organisateur et sous-comité d'organisation, à savoir (i) les sciences humaines, Grace Musila (Wits University), (ii) les sciences sociales, Jimi Adesina (UNISA) et (iii) les arts, Amanda Tumusiime (Makerere).

La conférence se déroulera en personne à l'UCT mais il y aura aussi l’option d’une participation virtuelle.
